Doug Martin, a two-time Pro Bowl running back who made his mark with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died at the age of 36, his family announced Sunday.
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time,” the family said in a statement released to multiple media outlets.
The Buccaneers paid tribute to Martin as a “fan favorite” who made “a lasting impact on our franchise.” The team also honored him among the top 50 players in franchise history during its 50th anniversary celebration.

Standing just 5-foot-9, Martin earned the affectionate nickname “Muscle Hamster” for his powerful, relentless running style. Over his seven-season NFL career, Martin rushed for 5,356 yards and 30 touchdowns, becoming one of Tampa Bay’s most dynamic offensive players.

A Boise State standout, Martin played from 2007 to 2011 and ranked among the top 10 in both career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns for the Broncos. His college success paved the way for a first-round selection by the Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft (31st overall).
Martin made an immediate impact as a rookie, racking up 1,454 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns, and adding 472 receiving yards on 49 catches. One of his most memorable moments came that season against the Oakland Raiders, when he exploded for 251 yards and four touchdowns, one of the greatest single-game performances in NFL history. His 1,926 yards from scrimmage that year ranked third all-time for a rookie, behind legends Eric Dickerson and Edgerrin James.

After battling injuries in the following seasons, Martin made a triumphant return in 2015, rushing for 1,402 yards and earning first-team All-Pro honors. His combination of speed, balance, and power made him a nightmare for defenders and a cornerstone for the Buccaneers’ offense.
Martin later spent a season with the Oakland Raiders in 2018 before retiring from the league. Despite injuries and challenges, his perseverance, humility, and heart on and off the field left a lasting impression on teammates and fans alike.
Born and raised in California, Doug Martin’s journey from Boise State hero to NFL All-Pro serves as a testament to his relentless drive and passion for the game. The football world mourns the loss of a true competitor whose impact reached far beyond the field.
